If you have suffered from an addiction (from drugs, alcohol, food, sex, work, etc.), it is very likely you've also suffered from trauma; whether the addiction is numbing some event or events from the past, or has occurred during the addiction itself. Addiction doesn't just 'happen'. It is often symptomatic of trauma and abuse (including neglect) from our childhood. I have client's say to me, "But Laurie, my childhood was fine. Why do I need to talk about my family?" only to find out that they were physically cared for, but were emotionally neglected. Because they're not aware of this, they continue to struggle in their relationships today.
Pia Mellody's PIT model is a wonderful and compassionate way to heal that inner child. In therapy we work to heal the old wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma or cumulative stress.
I am also trained in Somatic experiencing (SE) which can help the body, mind, and soul to gently heal. Like PIT it is nonjudgmental. It offers a way to get release from the sensation of being in fight or flight, or freeze, which may show up as the need to be constantly 'on' or business, high anxiety, feeling stuck and depressed or even angry. Both of these models work beautifully together.
I received my Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Psychology from St. Edwards University and a Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) from the University of Texas in Austin, Texas.
